While we may never know exactly how many licks it takes to get to the center of a Tootsie-Pop (thanks for nothing, Mr. Owl!), scientific research has confirmed that the average pillowcase will hold 1,690 pieces of candy. That’s nearly 48 pounds! I recently read that the average American eats about 25 pounds of candy a year. Twenty-five pounds! If you’re like me, I’m guessing most of that happened in your household this week. Fortunately, Daylight Savings Time ends this weekend, so we’ve got an extra hour of sleep to recover from those sugar highs (and lows). What a way to start a new month!
That’s right. It’s November. Can you believe it? Hurricane season will finally come to an end in just 30 days (“Hooray!” says anyone still dealing with the lingering effects of Isaac and Sandy). Soon we’ll all be gathering around tables filled with cranberry sauce and oyster dressing, watching a giant Snoopy fly by on TV. And in just a few days, we’ll be heading to the polls to cast our vote to determine our next president. I don’t know about you, but this Thanksgiving, I’ll be grateful for a break from all those political ads (and I’ll be saying thanks for that oyster dressing, too).
As overwhelming as the election commercials, flyers and pre-recorded phone messages can be, voting is an important privilege. Scripture tells us in Romans 13 to respect those in authority “for the authorities that exist have been established by God.” And 1 Timothy 2:1-2 tells us to pray for our governing leaders.
So, as you prepare to cast your vote for these candidates, please pray. Pray for guidance. Pray for God to give them wisdom. And pray that their hearts would be truly led by Him.
Now. Back to that oyster dressing…
