There’s a sweet spot in parenting children that exists between total dependence and adolescence. My kids are 12 (Kaylee) and 8 (Ben). They still get along for the most part – in fact they really are each other’s best friends. They play with their friends needing relatively little adult interference. (We just have to be present in case of scrapes, both physical and verbal.) They are super portable and can entertain themselves in the car (they love to travel). They have opinions and can talk about everything from Jesus to movies and Nintendo games to sports – in fact they are incredibly fun to just hang out with.
I know this beautiful season won’t last forever, but it is a real gift from God. The other day my kids and a couple of their neighborhood friends asked to wash my car. Uhm, OK! Elena and I set them up and they went to town. They vacuumed the inside, and scrubbed the outside all the while laughing hysterically as they played in the water hose. It was a really sweet way to spend an hour during a hot afternoon.
Sweet and simple.
Ever notice how sincere Joy can be when coupled with SIMPLE? To quote my homegirl Avril, “Why you gotta go and make things so complicated?”
Simple is good. Simple is honest. Simple can fill you up and evaporate anxiety.
May your Spring/Summer be filled with simple.
Perhaps the most simply put message of Peace and Hope and Love the world has ever been given is this:
“For this is how God loved the world: He gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life.” John 3:16 NLT
