I would consider myself to be a pretty independent woman. I mean I grew up in the era of independent women. It was the central focus of many pop songs growing up, shows, and was even modeled in my home.
Most of the time I don’t think my independence is a bad thing, but if I am not careful I can get a little unbalanced if you know what I mean.
I recently found myself carrying a stack of containers by myself inside to the office. My co-worker, (Libby) offered to help me with these containers to which I refused. Needless to say, the containers fell a couple times off the dolly I was using. And it took twice as long as it would have, if I would have just let Libby help me, in the first place. Oh yeah, and did I mention this was in the heat of the Summer in Louisiana? I know I’m crazy.
But this got me thinking, how many times does God offer us help and assistance and we hold onto the reins claiming “no, I got it” , “no, I can handle it.” But oftentimes we cannot. Friend, we are not meant to carry the weight of the world on our shoulders. If we do, it will eventually all come tumbling down like those storage containers did in my own life.
2 Corinthians 12:9 says, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest upon me.”
Being strong is awesome. But we don’t always have to be strong. Let’s allow others to carry the weight sometimes. Let someone else take on that responsibility. And rest in the grace that God’s got this thing called life, and we do not have to do it all or be it all.
