Have you heard Casting Crowns’ song Thrive? There are two lines in the chorus that always grab my attention: “It’s time for us to more than just survive. We were made to thrive.”
Are you thriving? Or are you surviving? I’ll be honest, most days, I feel like I’m barely surviving.
The alarm clock buzzes and it’s not even 5am.
At work, I find myself causing problems instead of solving them.
I manage a semi-awake afternoon of entertaining my son
For dinner? There’s the frozen chicken nuggets and a can of green beans.
The husband will arrive home to a sad dinner, once again.
At the end of the day, I haven’t cleaned the house. I haven’t cooked a meal. I haven’t been a good mother or wife. I don’t feel confident about my contributions at work. But I’m also relieved, because I survived.
And then I hear those lyrics from Casting Crowns, “We were made to thrive.” And instead of being excited, I feel pressured. Pressured to do more with my life. And the last thing I want to do is MORE.
But I don’t think God wants us to do more. He knows we can’t handle the pressures of life on our own. So He gives us the strength we need each day. And He infuses our days with moments of joy. And when we open our eyes to those moments, that’s when we thrive.
