“For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.” 2 Timothy 1:7 NKJV
If you’re anything like me when faced with tragedy you become fearful.
Last Wednesday, when I heard the news about the mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School my initial reaction was to try to act like I didn’t hear the news.
This was definitely not because I didn’t care, but simply because I didn’t want to believe something so senseless and tragic could happen, yet again. I thought about the faculty and staff that were lost that day in Parkland, Florida. I thought some more about my friend’s who are educators here in Louisiana. And I thought some more about how I would feel today in society sending my children to school.
(I’m very far from being married or having children, but I’m definitely a very deep thinker.)
As I continued to think about this tragedy, my heart was overcome with sorrow and fear. Should we all homeschool our children? Should we have stricter gun control? It was in that moment I heard the whisper of the Holy Spirit say, “ In the midst of tragedy don’t worry, you have to PRAY.”
It sounds so simple, yet prayer truly is the answer to tragedy.
The truth is as believers we can not cower in fear because of tragedy, we have to face this big world with our even bigger God and trust Him to bring change and comfort in the midst of tragedy.
All the world starts changing
When the church starts praying
Strongholds start to break
Oh, when we pray
Prison walls start shaking
At the sound of praising
Nothing stays the same
Oh, when we pray
Oh, when we pray, oh
