“For the Spirit God gave us does not make us timid, but gives us power, love, and self-discipline.” 2 Timothy 1:7 (NIV)
Have you ever found yourself holding back because of fear? Maybe it was speaking up in a meeting, starting a new project, or having a difficult conversation. Fear has this sneaky way of making us second-guess ourselves, convincing us that we’re not capable or that failure is inevitable.
I know this because I’ve been there too. I remember when God was calling me to start leading worship at church. Singing and playing piano? That I could do—I’d grown up doing it. But leading? That was different. I didn’t see myself as a leader. The thought of guiding others in worship felt overwhelming. What if I wasn’t good enough? What if I messed up? I kept telling myself, God, You must have the wrong person for this.
That’s why 2 Timothy 1:7 is so powerful. It reminds us that fear and timidity are not from God. The Spirit He’s given us isn’t one of hesitation or doubt; it’s one of power, love, and self-discipline. Whatever God calls us to, He equips us for. Leadership wasn’t about being the most confident or perfect—it was about trusting God to work through me.
Here’s what I’ve learned: courage isn’t the absence of fear; it’s trusting God enough to take the step anyway. That power isn’t just about boldness; it’s about His strength working through us. That love isn’t just for others; it’s the reminder that God loves us completely and works through our weaknesses. And that self-discipline isn’t just about control; it’s about trusting His guidance, one obedient step at a time.
What would you do today if fear didn’t hold you back? What opportunities would you say yes to, what conversations would you have, what risks would you take? The Spirit God has given you is all the courage you need. Step into the power, love, and self-discipline He’s already placed inside you.
