In Paul, Reset by Josh

“The Lord makes firm the steps of the one who delights in him; though he may stumble, he will not fall.” Psalm 37:23-24 (NIV)

There’s a scene in Indiana Jones: The Last Crusade where Indy stands at the edge of a deadly path, staring at a floor of stone tiles. Below him lies a cavernous drop into darkness. To make it across, he has to spell the name of God, Jehovah, correctly. But here’s the twist: it has to be spelled in Latin. One wrong step, and it’s over.

With his father’s life on the line, Indy carefully steps onto the first tile: J. It crumbles beneath him, nearly sending him into the abyss. Clinging to the edge, he pulls himself back to safety and remembers—the name starts with “I” in Latin. Testing the correct tile with his weight, he steps forward: “I…” The tile holds. Encouraged, he continues: “E… H…” The path is treacherous, sweat dripping as he double-checks each move. Step by step, he makes it across. His journey isn’t perfect, but his focus and persistence lead him safely to the other side.

I love movies! Sure, they’re just entertainment, but sometimes they sneak in a little life wisdom between the action scenes. Take this moment with Indy—trying to spell “Jehovah” correctly while dodging death. It’s the perfect metaphor for how life feels sometimes. We’re stepping forward, doing our best to honor God and make good choices, but we stumble. And when we do, it’s easy to feel like we’re clinging to the edge, hoping the next step won’t send us plummeting. The good news? Just like Indy had ancient instructions to guide him, we have something even better—God’s promises. And unlike Indy’s tiles, God’s promises never crumble.

Psalm 37:23-24 gives us hope: “The Lord makes firm the steps of the one who delights in him; though he may stumble, he will not fall.” God doesn’t promise a perfectly smooth path, but He does promise to steady us when the way feels shaky. Even when we stumble, His hand is there to keep us from falling. Like Indy trusted the ancient instructions to guide his path, we can trust God’s promises to lead us safely through life’s challenges.

This verse isn’t about walking perfectly; it’s about trusting the One who walks with us. God delights in guiding us forward, even when we feel unsteady. Take heart—God is steadying your steps and guiding you safely through every challenge. Trust His promises; they never crumble.
