In Paul, Reset by Josh

“I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” John 8:12 (NIV)

When I was about 7 years old, my family evacuated to Lafayette to stay with my aunt and uncle as a hurricane approached. The plan seemed solid—get out of the storm’s path and stay someplace safe. But storms don’t follow plans. At the last minute, the hurricane shifted, slamming Lafayette harder than where we lived. Instead of safety, we found ourselves in the heart of the storm. Should’ve just stayed home.

As you’d expect, the power went out. I was in an unfamiliar house, in total darkness, with the wind howling outside. I was scared, unsure of what to do, and the unfamiliarity only made it worse. But then my family lit candles, and their soft glow transformed the house. Suddenly, the shadows didn’t seem so threatening. Having my parents close by, reassuring me, brought a peace that made everything feel okay. What could’ve been a terrifying memory turned into something I actually look back on fondly.

Life has a way of throwing unexpected storms our way, doesn’t it? Circumstances shift, plans fall apart, and we’re left feeling disoriented or even afraid. That’s why Jesus’ words in John 8:12 are so powerful: “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”

Jesus doesn’t promise to take away the storms or prevent the power from going out in our lives. But He does promise to be our light—to guide us, comfort us, and make the darkness less overwhelming.

When we follow Jesus, His light gives us clarity and peace, even when everything around us feels chaotic. It doesn’t mean the storm disappears, but it does mean we’re not alone in it. Like those candles in my aunt and uncle’s house, His presence illuminates our path and reassures us that we’re going to be okay.

Whatever storm you’re facing right now, remember: you’re not alone. Jesus’ light shines brighter than any darkness, guiding you step by step to peace and hope. Trust Him—His light never falters, and He’ll guide you toward peace and hope, one step at a time.
